Luke McWilliams provides his overview of the 2021 drama movie, Compartment No. 6 (MA15+), starring Seidi Haarla and Yuri Borisov.

In Moscow within the Nineteen Nineties, Finnish scholar Laura (Seidi Haarla) is staying at her educational girlfriend’s home, attempting to maintain up along with her pretentious associates. Laura’s life is in transit. Placing an excessive amount of power into an apparent one-way relationship, Laura is decided to make a visit to see the petroglyphs in an try and combine herself into her apathetic fling’s lifestyle. The journey alongside the Arctic Circle is chilly, darkish and grim as are the situations within the prepare. Laura is out of her ingredient in additional methods than one, with the largest impediment being her cabinmate Lyokha, who’s a hard-drinking vulgar and impolite Russian miner. Of their first assembly, Lyokha first insults Laura however, over the tough five-day journey, inexplicably warms to her, as does she.

The film has a practical tone, with little or no dialogue, backstory and motivations; worlds away from Hollywood’s thought of a romance film. A lot is left unsaid and unexplained as our two lonely souls traverse a sparse surroundings to comparatively bleak futures, with a quiet bond forming within the meantime.

Verdict: Whereas the film is critically acclaimed, having gained the Grand Prix on the Cannes Movie Competition and lots of different nominations, Lyokha is so horrid at first introduction, that any connection between our lead’s rings hole, puzzling and misguided. 2.5 stars.
